Once, till the middle of the last century, Caracas used to be called «the city of red roofs». Today they remained in some old areas and appeared in totally new ones — in those where prevail quintas — private mansions of different degree of luxury. In the middle of the century oil production gave an impetus to industrialisation of the country, mass housing construction started to develop, and Caracas turned into a white-stone city. First high-rise buildings of glass and concrete appeared in the city. Though, with time, concrete structures turned darker and the city itself, in the period of neo-liberal division of the country, was rather neglected and presently, as never before, needs improvement.
