They received largely symbolic sentences totaling 822 years each for killing 28 people, trying to kill another 10 people, being gang members and carrying an illegal weapon, according to prosecutor Cesar Alvarenga. Under Honduran law, 40 years is the maximum time that can be served. Officials said the attackers were angry at a government crackdown against gang members who were taking over neighborhoods. The attackers left messages directed at the government and warning against a proposal to institute the death penalty, especially for gang-related crimes.
